The Swiss Geological Society (SGS) was established in 1882 as a National Executive Committee. The society is a member of the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT). The main goal of the SGS is to promote the advancement of Earth Sciences in general. The society not only publishes the Swiss Journal of Geosciences, but organizes scientific symposia, usually at the annual Swiss Geoscience Meetings, reunions of special interest groups, and thematic excursions in collaboration with the affiliated specialist groups and/or other scientific societies. The society also sponsors Erlebnis Geologie.
Swiss Journal of Geosciences
The flagship of the society is the Swiss Journal of Geosciences, which is published jointly with the Swiss Palaeontological Society. The Swiss Journal of Geosciences publishes original research and review articles, with a particular focus on the geological evolution of the Tethys realm and the Alpine/Himalayan orogen. By consolidating the former Eclogae Geologicae Helvetiae and the Swiss Bulletin of Mineralogy and Petrology, this international journal covers all disciplines of the solid Earth Sciences, including their practical applications. The Swiss Journal of Geosciences is published 3 times a year, and as of 2021, it is available in Open Access on the Springer website.

The following specialist groups are affiliated with our society:
Swiss Palaeontological Society
The society was funded in 1920 and aims at promoting palaeontological research and education in Switzerland. The society represents the interests of Swiss palaeontologists in society as well as in national and international scientific institutions and societies.
The main aim of the society is the publication and distribution of paleontological research, such as in the Swiss Journal of Geosciences and the Swiss Journal of Palaeontology, as well as the promotion of contacts with those interested in palaeontology. The society organizes courses and excursions, and awards the annual Amanz Gressly Prize (see "Awards"). For further information, contact , president of the Swiss Palaeontological Society.
Please also check our SPS publication Nerinea. See the events page for information on the yearly SPS General Meeting.
Swiss Society of Mineralogy and Petrology
The group promotes the advancement of mineralogy, petrology and geochemisty within the broader context of the Earth Sciences. The Swiss Bulletin of Mineralogy and Petrology (SBMP) was published from 1921 to 2005 in three issues per year with papers of international level in mineralogy, petrography, geochemistry, structural geology, isotope geology, ore deposits, applied mineralogy and related fields. SBMP/SMPM is fully digitized and searchable. The archive is offered on E-periodica.ch.
Swiss Tectonic Studies Group
Informal group of structural geologists, tectonicians, petrologists and geophysicists from Switzerland and adjacent countries, with a focus on Alpine geology. Annual excursions in the Alps are organized. For further information please contact or .
Informal group of Swiss (not exclusively) sedimentologists that promotes contacts, exchanges ideas, and informs on current developments in sedimentology.
